The release of the Apple HomePod speakers have been delayed until 2018 now. Apple said that they need more time to work on their HomePod. An Apple Spokesperson said that:
“We can't wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple's breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it's ready for our customers, We'll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018.”

Originally these speakers were set to be released in December this year. Their price was set at $349. Talking about the HomePod taking on capabilities, it is slated to take on some of the high-end sound systems like Sonos and the smart assistants like Amazon Echo as well. They would most probably take on the Google Home as well at the same time.
