Researchers train drones to use Wi-Fi to look through walls

The researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara; Yasamin Mostofi and Chitra R. Karanam have used two drones with a massive Wi-Fi antenna along with a little interpolation to see through the solid walls.

How it Works?

This is a two-fold type system. In this system one drone bombards the Wi-Fi through the structure. These signals are picked by the other drone. Then the two drones fly around the particular structure to map the difference in its strengths at different points. With the help of this method, these researchers successfully built the 3D model of the closed building.

High Resolution Mapping:

You can see in the video below that these drones are flying around the brick structure. It can be seen clearly that they are unable to see inside the structure. But even then, after some passes through the entire structure they start to map out the whole structure in High Resolution.

Yasamin Mostofi’s Thoughts:

The researcher Motofi said that: “Our proposed approach has enabled unmanned aerial vehicles to image details through walls in 3D with only Wi-Fi signals. This approach utilizes only Wi-Fi RSSI measurements, does not require any prior measurements in the area of interest and does not need objects to move to be imaged.”

Benefit:

This project will be really helpful in emergency situations, as we would be able to potentially map the indoor to know what’s inside it. In this way we would be able to know the inside of a building in emergency situations without breaching the door.
